Church on the Street

Center for Practical Theology

Internship/Practicum Information

The ministry of Church on the Street is two-fold: outreach to the chronically homeless and providing opportunities for the church to reflect theologically and practically on issues of poverty.  One way in which we are able to address both of these goals is by providing internship experiences for undergraduate, graduate and seminary students as well as other adults who are considering giving their lives to serve the poor.

What does being an intern entail?

Interns with Church on the Street will find a balance between hands-on ministry with the chronically homeless and extremely poor, and theological reflection through reading, writing, seminars and classes.  Interns will go through a thorough orientation and training process with Church on the Street staff in order to acclimatize them to the culture and people we daily work with on the streets and to familiarize them with the ethos and services Church on the Street and our partners offer.   Interns will then work hands-on with the poorest of the poor, developing meaningful reciprocal relationships with those living on the streets and in shelters, while participating with and leading the ministries of Church on the Street.  Interns will also be exposed to many different ministries, organizations and government agencies that serve the poor in order to learn about and experience the various approaches to caring for this population.  In addition, interns will read several books and articles, complete reflection and writing assignments, as well as attend seminars and classes related to poverty, homelessness and the theology of missions and the church that informs our understanding.

What are the requirements?

1)      Interns are required to raise financial support for the duration of their internship, with the balance due upon arrival to Atlanta.  The fee for the internship goes toward books and supplies as well as a monthly stipend for the intern.   The Summer session is $2400.  The Winter and Fall sessions are $3400.  Note: interns will not be allowed to work outside of Church on the Street during the internship.

2)      Interns must be at least 18 years old.

3)      Although Church on the Street provides housing and books, interns are responsible for their own meals and recreation.

4)      Interns must have an insured and reliable automobile.

5)      Interns must possess their own health insurance.

6)      Interns must become active in a local congregation.

7)      Interns must complete all reading and writing assignments.
