This blog is intended to spur discussion, inform and activate concerned Christians, and celebrate what God is doing in and through His church for the sake of the vulnerable and forgotten.

Reactions from the Streets
By host on Sunday, June 21, 2009 8:01 PM
We had an incredible week of ministry with our first team for the summer. They are from Bayside Community Church in Safety Harbor, Florida. I will soon be posting a blog about how they disrupted the dealers in the park. But for now here are a few of their testimonies about how God transformed them through their experience on the streets with the poor and forgotten.

"This trip has opened my eyes to many things. It has taught me that sometimes all a person may need is a hello or a handshake or someone to listen to them. [I learned] from these people living on the streets not to take things for granted, love your neighbor, and have faith in God no matter what." -Taylor

"This week in Atlanta has been a life changing experience. I started the trip being very nervous about talking to homeless people, and by the end, if I had a choice I wanted to talk to them. My perspecti ...

Mission Teams: Disrupt the Dealers
By host on Saturday, June 20, 2009 10:43 AM
A few weeks ago I wrote about being so frustrated with the increased drug activity I was seeing in our parish that I decided to go and sit on the corner with the drug dealers. Just sit there. I knew my presence would disrupt their business, because they are reluctant to deal in front of me and buyers are definitely reluctant to buy in front of me. This forces the dealers either to A) move me along, or B) move along themselves. They chose option B. (As crazy as this action might seem, I’ve been around enough to know the right places and times to engage in this sort of activity.) This got me thinking about how easy it is for me to disrupt “business as usual.” (Again, this is risky business attempted by someone with 10 years of street ministry experience and an established presence in the community. I don’t recommend this at home.) To be honest, sometimes people do not stop what they are doing because I show up. They either do not care someone is there, or do not care that I am there. Either they igno ...

The end of the Metro Atlanta Taskforce for the Homeless? The shelter at Peachtree and Pine
By host on Thursday, June 04, 2009 10:55 AM

We arrived home around 5pm Sunday from a weekend away in North Carolina. On the way to our apartment I decided to drive by the shelter at Peachtree and Pine Streets to see how things were going. The shelter, if you don’t know, is located conveniently at the end of the exit off of Interstate 75 situated on the most storied of streets in Atlanta. Across the street from the shelter is the newly minted, Emory University Hospital Midtown. Surrounding the shelter are businesses, restaurants, town houses and condominiums. Within a stones throw are two of the most respectable churches in the city, St. Luke’s Episcopal and North Avenue Presbyterian. As we drove by the shelter there were no less than 50 homeless men filling the sidewalk immediately outside of the building and across the street. Hundreds more were inside. The enormous warehouse-like building itself, built in the 1920’s, gives off a dingy dark presence despite the paint and new windows toward the Peachtree Street side of the building. There is a ...

A Good Day on the Streets
By host on Tuesday, May 19, 2009 9:06 PM

Jurassic Park.jpg

Today was a good and interesting day on the streets walking my parish.  I started off heading into the city park, known as Jurassic Park on the streets, where many of the cities addicts buy and take their drugs.  I first noticed how the city had allowed the park to begin to grow over.  Neglect of the park only allows for dealers to do their business in more a more concealed environment.

Back in 2001, still the early days of Church on the Street, the alumni magazine for my undergrad alma mater, Anderson University, decided to do a feature article on me and my work with the homeless.  (You can read that article here)  The cover of the magazine featured me with one of the guys I spe ...

New Faces of the Homeless
By host on Monday, May 11, 2009 1:02 PM
With the economic hardship that has hit the world the homeless population in the US is again on the rise.  CNN has a great story on the new faces that are popping up on the streets.  The story is centered in LA but I can attest to the same things happening here in Atlanta.  It is definitely worth the read for anyone concerned about the poor and vulnerable.   You can link to CNN's story here.  After reading this story you will have a better sense of the difficulties that the homeless and those serving the homeless are facing.

Ordinary Encounters
By host on Monday, May 04, 2009 4:35 PM

We have had a lot of rain recently in Atlanta.  Thunder storms, torrential downpours and tornado warnings have been with us for a few days and are forecasted to be with us the whole week.  So today, when the rain stopped I went out with my backpack filled with socks, t-shirts and hand towels.  Since it had been raining so much I knew my homeless friends would be out in force having been cooped up in the hot, crowded, dark, dirty shelter for so long.  I was right.  I saw many of the same folks I usually see and I ran into a man I had never met before.

The men of New Grace Church in Jacksonville, FL are here to serve with us for the weekend. We started today (friday) around 2:30 with some introduction and teaching about what we do, and what they will be doing with us and how. They are now out picking up the trash in our community and introducing themselves to the men and women living on our streets. After dinner they will head down to Woodruff Park for a late night on the streets with our homeless friends, learning and sharing as well as providing some cl ...

King's Academy Testimonies
By host on Thursday, April 30, 2009 1:45 PM
Here is a sample of the comments and testimonies the students from King's Academy made about their experience with Church on the Street. Feel free to leave some of your own, even if you are not from King's Academy. (If you know who made the anonymous comments let me know.)

Pastor Andy

It was great getting to see all that's being done for those on the steet, and seeing what life's like from the perspective of those people was a real eye-opener. This trip certainly inspired me to act in some way myself, in God's name. - Todd

Probably the most powerful thing for me this week was making friends. That's it. I didn't feel like I was giving out charity or embarrassing people with sympathy. Instead, I focused on being a friend and the people on the streets reciprocated that. It was a great feeling. - Austin

I have learned so much on just this short week! I am so greatful of the opportunity [to put what I've learned] into ...

This evening a group of five young women from Michigan arrived to work on the streets with the poor and homeless. Tonight was a night of orientation and introduction to the men and women on the streets. They hung out at Woodruff Park with the folks playing spades, dominos and chess. They also spent time w ...

King's Academy - Friday
By host on Friday, April 24, 2009 9:52 AM
Today's the last day we get to spend with King's Academy before they head back to Indiana. The morning will be spent at the Dr. King Center, then they will head out to Fulton Industrial to spend time on the streets with the poor. They will end the night in one of our city parks ministering with the homeless before having a time to reflect on what they have learned this week and how they are going to implement those lessons when they get back home. I'll add some pictures to this note later tonight.

My Daughter, a Drug Dealer and a Crack Head...God Uses All
By host on Friday, April 10, 2009 9:39 PM

This is a new posting of an older post from last September.

I’m preparing to leave for England tomorrow for an ethics conference at Cambridge University.  Amidst all the preparations for the trip I was debating if I would have time to go out for a while to say hello to our men and women living on the streets.  After much thought I decided that since I would not be around for the rest of the week I would make a quick trip through the neighborhood.  Often on these quick walks I will take my daughter Ainsley along for the ride (in her stroller) as she is usually able to bring a smile to everyone’s face with ...
